Pearsauce

My husband calls it a mid-morning snack. I call it his second breakfast. Semantics aside, as sure as the sun rises, I can count on him eating oatmeal every morning for this so-called mid-morning snack. At least I can give him props for eating something healthy.

When I was a kid, I loved mixing applesauce into my oatmeal. I suggested this to my husband who was intrigued because he’d never heard of such a thing. But now that I’d told him, it was something he wanted to try.

With applesauce, there’s no way you could get me to buy that pre-made jarred junk. I always make my own. But then I thought that I would mix things up by making pearsauce instead. Apples get so much love in the fall, but pears are in season too. And they’re so sweet and wonderful too.

If you’ve ever made applesauce, making pearsauce is just as easy. It basically follows the same principles. I peeled, cored, and sliced an assortment of pears, then placed them in a pot with pear juice, and an orange that was pierced with cloves. I added a little lemon juice and brown sugar, then cooked my creation up until the pears were soft. Once the pears were soft, I pureed them in the food processor. If you’re looking for something sweet and fruity that gets you out of your apple rut, you need pearsauce in your life.

As for my husband, he’s now loving mixing pearsauce into his daily mid-morning oatmeal snack.

Pearsauce

Ingredients
3 lbs of pears (Bartlett pears, Anjou pears, Bosc pears)
1/2 cup pear juice
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 tangerine with 12 cloves pierced in it
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Directions

  1. Peel the pears and core the pears.  Cut them into quarters. Place them in a pan with the tangerine and bring to a boil over medium heat.  Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.  Lower the heat to a simmer.  Cook until you can easily pierce the pears with a fork.
  2. Puree the pear mixture in a food processor or blender.
